Special Request

Dear Sir,

My name is Frank Greco and I am trying to trace some of the military history of my late father, Frank M. Greco. He was with The Army Air Corps in WWII as a control tower operator in India and the Pacific area and reenlisted in the Air Force at the time of the Korean War and served their also.

I have one set of orders that shows he was with 1st AACS Squadron Mobile in 1958 in APO 994 and 323 and was also assigned to the 1232ND AACSRON. He was also involved with the Quemoy Island incident. He retired in 1964 as a SMSgt. and passed away in 1998.

Some small family history (my father and I never discussed our military service much) suggests that he was involved in setting up mobile air control towers and communications equipment in Thailand in the late 1950's and the same in Vietnam in the early 1960's. We were stationed a Johnson AFB (Japan) in the 1950's and in southern California in the early 1960's and my father often went away on TDY for 1 to 3 months.

One of the reasons for my inquiry is that I am currently writing a book about my tour of duty with MACV/SOG in 1969. In addition to running ground recon missions in Laos/Cambodia/North Vietnam I was also the NCOIC for our photo lab at Command and Control Central (Kontum) and flew frequently in Cessna O-1's.

My father mentioned one time that he also flew in Cessna O-1's in the Korean War and we sometimes wondered if we had flown in the same aircraft. I was told by some of our pilots that many of the O-1's dated back to the Korean War (just like the A1E Douglas Skyraiders). If I can determine that it is fact, and not just family lore, I intend to include some of my father's military service in my book, showing a family link in the same theater of operation.

I have some initial questions I hope you can help with. Where were APO's 994 and 323? (answered - Johnson AB & Tachikawa AB)

If he was part of AACS in the Korean War what would require him to fly in an O-1?

Does the above family history of his setting up equipment in Thailand and Vietnam square with the activities of AACS at that time?

What other groups or individuals can I contact in an effort to shed light on this? I have requested his military records from the Military Personnel Records at St. Louis, MO but don't expect a response for several months.

Thanks for any help

Frank Greco
