Forst, Germany - April, 1988

In the On Project section a picture called QRP 88 brings back many memories.

I was the SATCOM Team Chief at Forst and I think that might be me in the picture at the back of the van. I know we set up in a parking lot but I don’t remember it being that closed in. Maybe getting old.

The Forst mission was just before Easter. Specifically 31 March 88. Here’s a link, with more information on the crash: F-16.net

I think the plane went down on a Friday or the day before. We heard the news about noon of that day. Around 1500 we were told to pack up to roll. We fueled and left Lindsey around 2100. Lousy weather with rain and sleet all the way. Arrived in Forst sometime after midnight. Maybe 0200 or so. We originally set up shop in the city square of the town right in front of city hall. At about 0630 I left the SATCOM van to tell the boss (Female Major I can’t recall the name but it might have been Susan Jenke) we had comm. At the same time she was coming out of the City Hall to tell us we had to move about 6 miles down the road. Seems the Germans had wind of some kind of anti-military protest and they couldn’t or wouldn’t guarantee our safety. What the heck, we’d already been up for 24 hours, what’s a little move down the road?

Good part about that mission was we stayed in a Ghasthouse. Real beds and showers! Oh Yea! Hot food and beer too! :-) - Kevin Kline
