"We were taking a NDB Navaid in to a remote Thai Air Base in the most northern area of the country. A pre-site visit showed adequate support capability for the aircraft. However, it rained the night before deployment, and rendered the airfield ramp area unusable with a loaded aircraft. The deployment was supposed to have been discrete, but our cover was blown as the entire team was on the first aircraft, as shown above, and the other two aircraft, with all our support equipment and quarters (Jamesway) were unable to land. The Thai Commander put us up down-town in a hotel where we stayed through-out the deployment. Hardy effort by the Thai Army failed to resolve the problem. The US Air Force had to bring in air bags and hoist the aircraft up high enough to fill in the holes." - Bill Palmore |
