Sandbagging the Tower
Lee Bracken and Sgt Jesse Davis
Team 82-66
Dong Ha, Vietnam - July 1966

"Jesse Davis was team commander on Team 82-66, Control Tower to Dong Ha at the end of July 1966. They were to install the tower, have it checked out and then turn it over to the Marines who were involved in Operation Hastings. Every evening, the RVN howitzer crew would fire about 5, 155mm rounds, into the south China Sea. What a joke. Flares were shot up continuously during the night. The Marines were living in pup tents along side the 3,500 dirt strip with their deceased comrades lined up, in body bags, right next to the runway. SAC had a site, called "Waterboy" there also. They would tell the B-52s where to drop their load. I awoke one morning at 5 with the bed shaking from the 10,000 pounders dropped about 10 miles away. A Canadian officer, who spent his time in the DMZ, would come around and tell us what was going on." - Bob Thompson
