The Early Days

Major Ted Tanner left the 1st Mob around April of 1955. Captain Walter J Tilke (Adjutant) was acting CO until Major Bertie arrived. Captain Coley, was Operations officer, Captain Mays, was Communications officer and 1st Lieutenant Stanley Namaya was Personnel officer.

These were the original and only officers we had in the Squadron.

Also during this period we were more of a bunch of guys trying to get a job done, than a Military unit. We did not particiate in base parades or pull any other duties as Major Tanner would always make sure the Base Commander knew we were only attached to Johnson AB, not assigned there...and to quit bothering us for Military Type stuff.

We also had access to wheels as we had our own Motor Pool and always needed a Jeep to do "radio tests" or "DF tests" from where ever we needed to go...no one ever noticed we didn't have a radio in the vehicle....those were the fun days, but the job was always done !!!!!

Hope this helps a little with the early days of the 1st AACS Squadron (Mob) APO 994......

Best wishes......
